Trade Deadline Preview Part One

Well, it is that time of year. For those hockey fans who's crack is the NHL, it is the best time of year....trade deadline time. Rumours that have been floating for months come to fruition or die an agonizing death. It gives you a read into what you're teams views are, are they buyers or sellers...loading up now or looking toward the future. This is my first blog entry, and it's a perfect topic, full of plenty of story lines for me to flex my muscle and put my NHL knowledge to the test, predicting who will do what and why. So here it is for all you crack (NHL) loving people out there, Part One of my Trade Deadline Preview:



Anaheim Ducks

Status: Limbo

Analysis: Currently tied for the final playoff spot in the West, however they have played two more games than the teams they are tied with, leaving them in a tight situation. Most teams in this predicament would be considered buyers, but rumours continue to swirl regarding their key assets, mainly Chris Pronger and Scott Niedermayer. Those rumours intensified with the addition of Ryan Whitney yesterday, does this make one of the big two available on the open market?

Needs: Fairly strong down the middle, but this team could use more depth on the wings to help put the puck in the net. Also could lean towards getting younger, so prospects and picks are high on their list.

Attractive Assets: Scott Niedermayer, Chris Pronger, Todd Marchant, Brendan Morrison, Brett Hedican, Brian Salcido, JS Giguere

Possible Outcome: Likely that we’ll see the Ducks stand somewhat pat, maybe make a couple of smaller deals, maybe even slightly leaning towards getting younger. This could be a tough sell and management needs to make sure they keep the fans happy by not appearing to be “selling” too hard. There is also the chance the Ducks make a big splash and trade away either one of Pronger or Niedermayer…or, you heard it here first…JS Giguere. As for the return for Pronger and Niedermayer, the price will be high, so I doubt anything happens. If the Ducks lose a few more games this weekend we could see the for sale sign come out and bidding come in. Marchant could definitely be gone to a contender looking for depth on the 3rd and 4th lines, possibly Detroit, Boston or even the Sharks.

Longshot Moves: Ducks trade JS Giguere and Scott Niedermayer to Montreal for Carey Price and Roman Hamrlik.

Atlanta Thrashers

Status: Sellers

Analysis: Seller dwellers that are destined for a top 3 pick this year, especially if they can dump some of their veteran talent for prospects and picks.

Needs: This team has a few solid prospects coming down the pipe, but no one that is a real stud. At this point this franchise really needs a young dynamic player to play alongside Kovalchuk. John Tavares would fit in well, but that would require some luck in the lottery this spring. So they will look to sell assets and hopefully find a gem.

Attractive Assets: Todd White, Niclas Havelid, Garnett Exelby, Slava Kozlov, Colby Armstrong, Marty Reasoner, Kari Lehtonen.

Possible Outcome: No doubt the Thrashers are big-time sellers, looking to get lucky and maybe even get a shot at number one overall. In order for that to happen the Thrash need to move some of their veterans and hope to lose a few more games. Ilya Kovalchuk is the only untouchable on the roster, and put an asterisk beside Kozlov, due to a no trade deal. You can expect to see Armstrong go back to the Pens after months of this rumour floating around, probably for a decent pick, 3rd rounder likely. Havelid could go to any number of teams looking for depth on D down the stretch, such as Chicago, Detroit or New Jersey. White is a mix of a 2nd line center and a 3rd, so he would fit very well on many teams looking for more punch in the postseason. As for Lehtonen, this guy has been rumoured to be on the move for several years now, and nothing seems to ever get done. Many teams are after a backup and this kid has shown he can get it done at the AHL level, and still has the potential to be a solid starting goalie.

Longshot Moves: Atlanta trades Kari Lehtonen and Garnett Exelby to Calgary for Matthew Lombardi and their first round pick in 2009.

Boston Bruins

Status: Buyers

Analysis: Barring a big collapse Boston has number one in the Eastern Conference wrapped up. This team excels down the middle of the ice at the centre position and plays a tight defensive game under coach Julien. With the Bruins being in uncharted waters they may stand pat and hope for the best, or realize the unique situation and make a splash, hoping to take advantage of their strong play so far this season. They don’t have a lot to offer off their roster, so picks and prospects may be the way to go for the Bruins at the deadline.

Needs: With Marco Sturm being out for the rest of the year, this team could use another top 6 forward to take some of the pressure off Kessel, Savard and the rest of the committee. Their defence is unspectacular, but extremely solid, but another depth guy would not hurt the back end either.

Attractive Assets: Manny Fernandez, Petteri Nokelainen, Vladimir Sobotka, Joe Colborne, Picks

Possible Outcome: We could see a deal involving Keith Tkachuk leaving St. Louis once again at the deadline to head home and play for the hometown Bruins. Boston could use another big body to bang and crash and Tkachuk would fit perfectly into their style of play. The ability of him to play the wing and center is also a huge plus. Going back the other way would have to be a combination of picks and prospects. Likely either Vladimir Sobotka or Joe Colborne, along with a 2nd round pick going to the Blues. Tkachuk’s unique services are rumoured to be going several places, so the Blues are in a great spot to get great return. Other similar options for a power forward would be Bill Guerin (NYI) and Erik Cole (EDM). As for Fernandez, his solid backup play this year has him as a hot commodity. There are several teams with question marks behind their number one goalies and he would look great in Calgary, Columbus or even Buffalo if Miller’s injury is somewhat long-term.

Longshot Moves: With the Bruins spot at the top of the East and with their team chemistry, no long shot moves would make any sense for this franchise.

Buffalo Sabres

Status: Buyers

Analysis: The Buffalo Sabres are hanging around in the top 8 in the Eastern Conference, but that can change on any given day. Given the market and the rabid Sabres fans, expect them to be buyers this time around at the deadline. A couple of key injuries up front leaves the Sabres looking for a top six forward, and possibly another veteran defenseman. A couple of younger players on the roster or in the minors can be had from the Sabres if the deal works. Ryan Miller’s injury is also very intriguing. No exact time table has been set and Jhonas Enroth has been called up to play backup for more than shaky Patrick Lalime.

Needs: A top six forward, possibly a power forward to add more grit and punch into the small, speedy Sabres line-up. A veteran defenseman. Depending on the severity of Miller’s injury, Buffalo may feel the heat to stay in the race, and make a desperation move to add a solid goaltender to hold them in til Ryan can return.

Attractive Assets: Tim Connolly, Patrick Kaleta, Dan Paille, Chris Butler, Mike Weber, Nathan Gerbe, Andrej Sekera, Picks

Possible Outcome: We can all expect minor tinkering from the Sabres, atleast the addition of one forward. With all the depth down the middle the addition of a winger with some crash and size would be a great fit for the Sabres. A few solid possibilities would be Ryan Malone (TB) and David Backes (StL). The goaltending situation will have to work itself out, unless the Sabres staff really feel the pressure to make a move. If so, a few guys could fit the bill including Kevin Weekes (NJ) and Craig Anderson (FLA). On defence the Sabres are searching for something that almost all the buying teams want, veteran depth. Several solid players should be available including Jordan Leopold (COL), Ruslan Salei (COL), Denis Gauthier (LA) and Derek Morris (PHX).

Longshot Moves: Buffalo trades Max Afinogenov, Tim Connolly and a 2nd round pick to Phoenix for Olli Jokinen.

Calgary Flames

Status: Buyers

Analysis: According to Darryl Sutter, he’s done with his dealing at the trade deadline, but who knows how honest he’s being. Since then he has also lost Mark Giordano for the season with shoulder surgery. The Flames have pulled away in the Northwest and are an essential lock for the postseason. Don’t expect too much tinkering from the Flames down the stretch and we should see them sail into the playoffs with home ice advantage. Another need for the Flames would be a veteran goalie to backup Kiprusoff, as Keenan loves to pull his goalie if he has an off night, especially early in the playoffs.

Needs: A veteran depth defenseman. A veteran backup goalie.

Attractive Assets: Matthew Lombardi, Eric Nystrom, Picks

Possible Outcome: The Flames brass believe they have a roster that can challenge in the West, but knowing the battle in the postseason, more depth is never a bad idea. I would expect atleast one move from Calgary to bolster the back end, whether in net or on D. As for defenseman there are two or three guys that would fit the Flames plans perfectly, including Jay McKee (StL), Ken Klee (PHX) and Brett Clark (COL). Between the pipes the options get slimmer. Two solid choices as a backup to Kipper include Kevin Weekes (NJ) and Manny Legace (StL). Last month I thought the Flames were stupid not to take a shot at Martin Gerber, who could probably be had for a low level prospect or a late pick. If I were the Flames, Gerber is an option that could also be worth a look.

Longshot Moves: With the Flames being up against the cap, a longshot move might be tough to come by, unless they move a roster player. With that being said I’m not sure many roster players could be moved, with the exception of Matthew Lombardi. If the Flames make a large deal, Lombardi would likely need to be included.

Carolina Hurricanes

Status: Limbo (Buyers)

Analysis: The Hurricanes are currently on the outside looking in, but they are still heavily involved in rumours, leading me to believe that they are going to be heavy buyers at the deadline. Despite where they sit in the standings, Carolina has a ton of valuable assets that can be moved if necessary. The Canes don’t defend terribly well and are -16 in GA differential, leading me to believe that a shutdown defenseman would be a great fit. The Hurricanes are also rumoured to be after Eric Cole, hoping he can return to his old form. If the Cole deal doesn’t work out, another power forward will be high on the wish list of Jim Rutherford in Carolina.

Needs: A top pairing shut down defenseman. And a power forward to play on the top two lines alongside Staal.

Attractive Assets: Joe Corvo, Anton Babchuk, Rob Brind’Amour, Patrick Eaves, Frank Kaberle, Prospects, Picks

Possible Outcome: Look for the Canes to continue their push for Erik Cole (EDM), who can likely be had for a decent level prospect along with a guy like Patrick Eaves. Due to the injury of Visnovsky in Edmonton, Joe Corvo could also be an attractive option for the Oilers. As for the shutdown defenseman, a guy like Brooks Orpik (PITT) would fit the bill, but the Pens moving Ryan Whitney likely eliminates that possibility. Two solid options for Carolina would have to include Jason Smith (OTT) and Greg DeVries (NAS).

Longshot Moves: Carolina trades Joe Corvo and Patrick Eaves to Toronto for Pavel Kubina. Carolina trades Rod Brind’Amour to Chicago for Jack Skille and top end picks.

Chicago Blackhawks

Status: Buyers

Analysis: The surprise Blackhawks continue to hold steady in the Western Conference. This young team could still use a couple of additions to help, especially down the middle. The Hawks have survived all season with a lack of depth at the center position, and I would expect them to make an addition to bolster the forward group. Chicago is up against the cap, so that limits what they can expect to get done.

Needs: A veteran center at limited cost. A depth defenseman with playoff experience.

Attractive Assets: David Bolland, Jack Skille, Troy Brouwer, Dustin Byfuglien, Picks

Possible Outcome: Two guys would fit the Hawks absolutely perfectly, one an older guy, and the other a younger, bigger center. First, Doug Weight (NYI) would look great in Chicago. He is having a solid year and would fit in great on the Hawks third line, bringing a veteran presence heading into the postseason. The Isles asking price would likely be fairly cheap for an aging veteran. The other option being Nik Antropov (TOR). The asking price is too high in my opinion, but if anyone has enough young talent to present a solid package to Brian Burke, it’s the Hawks. I would not be surprised if a package revolving around Dustin Byfuglien went back Toronto’s way to get Antropov. As for a depth defender, a guy like Sean O’Donnell (LA) would add a tough presence to the blueline alongside Seabrook, Keith and Barker.

Longshot Moves: Chicago trades Dustin Byfuglien, David Bolland and a first round pick to Toronto for Nik Antropov and Ian White.

Colorado Avalanche

Status: Sellers

Analysis: Colorado has battled injuries all year and now it’s finally time hang them up and sell sell sell. As an Avs fan I truly hope team brass see’s the writing on the wall and dumps as many veterans as possible. Rumours continue to swirl that Ryan Smyth is going pretty much anywhere, but I really don’t expect him to be dealt. If the Avs are smart they’ll dump whoever they can and reload with top end draft picks at this summers draft.

Needs: Colorado is slowly but surely stocking the cupboard as far as prospects are concerned with players like Kevin Shattenkirk, Nigel Williams and Ryan Stoa all waiting in the wings. Currently sitting last in the Western Conference Colorado legitimately have a shot at a top 3 pick, depending on how the balls bounce in the lottery. More prospects are needed if Colorado hope to make a return to the top of the pile out West in the near future.

Attractive Assets: Ruslan Salei, Jordan Leopold, Brett Clark, Marek Svatos, Ian Laperriere, Darcy Tucker, Ryan Smyth

Possible Outcome: Many players can be had from the sinking Avalanche, and most of them have fairly respectable value. Ian Laperriere would look great on a team like Montreal. He adds size, grit, toughness and leadership that Montreal is lacking right now. More grit is available on the roster in the form of Darcy Tucker. Nearly all playoff bound teams could use a player like Tucker, but his salary of 1.25M for next year may scare off some suitors. Detroit is said to be looking for a third liner grinder and Tucker would fit the bill. Maybe a 3rd or 4th round pick would get that deal done. Marek Svatos provides some pop on a teams top two lines, and is definitely attracting attention. Two teams that could be interested include the Florida Panthers and the Vancouver Canucks. As for the defenseman, no one is safe. Salei, Leopold and Clark will all bring in offers, what those offers are is another issue. As for Ryan Smyth, if he is moved, Avs fans better expect atleast a young roster player, a top prospect and a first round pick coming back the other way. If this deal goes down I think their may be many unhappy people in Denver.

Longshot Moves: Colorado trades Ryan Smyth to Vancouver for Cory Schneider, Mason Raymond, First round pick in 2009, and a second round pick in 2010.

Columbus Blue Jackets

Status: Buyers

Analysis: The Blue Jackets are in untreaded water, flirting with the playoffs for the first time in team history. With this new spot, expect the BJ’s to be big buyers at the deadline. Ken Hitchcock has these guys rolling and playing a solid defensive system. Look for Scott Howson to make a couple deals in hopes of deepening their forward group.

Needs: A big center to take the load off RJ Umberger and Rick Nash. Possibly another defenseman to bring depth to this young core in Columbus.

Attractive Assets: Not much that Columbus will be willing to move besides medium range prospects and future picks.

Possible Outcome: Expect Columbus to either make one large move for a center or a couple smaller depth deals. With the Olli Jokinen experiment failing in Phoenix, he could be a great fit for the Jackets. It may take a bit to pry him from the hands of the Yotes, but he would look great along with Rick Nash, adding more size and speed down the middle. Another viable option would be Steven Reinprecht, also from the Coyotes. Someone else that may be available is Mike Fisher (OTT). On the backend, a guy like Tom Preissing (LA) would add more offensive flair from the blueline that would go great with this young Columbus team. In the nets, expect them to ride rookie Steve Mason, they will likely live or die with his play down the stretch.

Longshot Moves: Columbus trades Cody Goloubef and a 2nd round pick to Ottawa for Mike Fisher.

Dallas Stars

Status: Limbo (Buyers)

Analysis: Two months ago no one thought the Stars would have a shot at the postseason, but improved play has them battling for a spot. Injuries to key forwards and defenseman has them treading water, so a boost in the reserves could very well be on the way. Players like Lehtinen, Zubov, Richards and captain Brenden Morrow have all missed significant time this year. Dallas has several young players and prospects that may be attractive to teams looking to add more depth to their prospect pools.

Needs: Top 6 forward to play alongside Mike Ribeiro. Another top 4 defenseman to help fill the gap and add veteran presence heading into the toughest time of the year.

Attractive Assets: James Neal, Nicklas Grossman, Sean Avery, Mark Fistric, Ivan Vishnevsky, Picks

Possible Outcome: Don’t be surprised to see Dallas make an attempt at a top 6 forward, whether that pans out or not is another problem. They do have plenty of depth to sweeten the pot, something most teams don’t. Stars management is high on some young players, but you have to give something to get something. Some names that may be attractive to Dallas are Marek Svatos (COL), Antoine Vermette (OTT) and Bill Guerin (NYI), who has recently stated he’d waive his no trade clause if the deal suited him well. Another intriguing angle to this situation is Sean Avery. He has been cleared to return to the NHL, but is currently playing in the AHL. Dallas would love to move this guy, even if it means eating his salary. Expect him to go to the Rangers, as they stumble their way down the stretch. Another need for this team is a depth defender, but that’s something that’s high on everyone’s list.

Longshot Moves: Dallas trade James Neal, Brian Sutherby and a second round pick to Tampa Bay for Martin St. Louis.

Detroit Red Wings

Status: Buyers

Analysis: Once again the Red Wings are near the top of the pile in the Western Conference. This team has been rolling all year long, so don’t expect Ken Holland to add a big piece to the puzzle. Some minor tweaking is all this team needs. Goaltending has been the problem all year as once again people are doubting Chris Osgood, what else is new? Holland and the brass have stated all year they are confident in the duo of Ozzy and Ty Conklin, so don’t expect them to back away from that now.

Needs: Third or fourth line grinder. Top 6 defender with grit and a veteran presence.

Attractive Assets: Jonathan Ericsson, Ville Leino, Tomas Kopecky, Derek Meech, Picks

Possible Outcome: If you look at any of the teams currently out of the playoff picture, they all have a player that would fit in well with the Wings. Grinder’s are not hard to come by, its just a matter of who the Wings target. A couple of guys that would fit the bill perfectly are Jeff Halpern (TB), Scott Nichol (NAS) or even Chris Neil (OTT). As for defensemen, they are a hotter commodity, so expect the Wings to possibly have to deal a young roster player or prospect to acquire a guy like Niclas Havelid (AtL) or Brendan Witt (NYI).

Longshot Moves: Detroit trades Jonathan Ericsson, Ville Leino and a first round pick to Tampa Bay for Jeff Halpern and Mike Smith.

Edmonton Oilers

Status: Limbo (Buyers)

Analysis: Edmonton has failed to put together a long stretch of consistent hockey, so their status at the deadline remains up in the air. Rumours continue to swirl about moving Erik Cole, but that only makes sense if it’s a player for a player deal, due to their tenuous standing position. This young group of forwards could use another veteran player up front to help play alongside kids like Cogliano and Gagner, something easier said than done.

Needs: A veteran forward to play on the top two lines. Possibly a veteran depth defender with some offensive punch to replace the injured Lubomir Visnovsky.

Attractive Assets: Erik Cole, Dustin Penner, Denis Grebeshkov, Theo Peckham, Rob Schremp, Taylor Chorney

Possible Outcome: We could see a couple of deals by Edmonton to make some adjustments to this current group. I would not be surprised to see Cole shipped back to Carolina for a package revolving around offensive dman Joe Corvo. His slick passing would look great at Rexall Place. After that a deal involving one of Edmonton’s prospect would be expect to bring in a veteran presence up front. Two former Oilers would help bolster this group, Bill Guerin (NYI) and Doug Weight (NYI). A player like Jason Blake (TOR) could also fit nicely with this group, but Edmonton already lacks size up front, so expect them to attempt to add a bigger body.

Longshot Moves: Edmonton trades Jordan Eberle, Dustin Penner and a 1st round pick in 2009 to Ottawa for Jason Spezza and Jason Smith.

Florida Panthers

Status: Buyers

Analysis: For the first time in years the Florida Panthers are relevant nearing the trade deadline. Being in such a tough market, expect Florida to be buyers at this years deadline. They’ve been one of the hottest teams since the All Star break, but could still use some minor tinkering down the stretch. Also, the contract situation involving all-world defenseman Jay Bouwmeester still is a big issue on the plate of Panthers brass, to sell or keep and hope to make the playoffs.

Needs: Florida has one of the deepest bluelines in the league, but up front they lack that same depth. Florida is in need of another centerman, as well as a winger.

Attractive Assets: Anthony Stewart, Jay Bouwmeester, Keaton Ellerby, Michael Frolik, Shawn Matthias, Picks

Possible Outcome: With Florida finally making strides toward the postseason for the first time in nearly a decade, don’t expect them to move many of their prospects. They understand they are still in the middle of a rebuild, so there’s no need to set them back. That is, unless they acquire some younger talent that is already under contract for a few years. Nik Antropov (TOR) would look great down the middle for the Panthers. Going back the other way would have to be a top prospect, such as Ellerby or Stewart, as well as the Panthers first round pick this year. Player’s like Darcy Tucker (COL), Gary Robers (TB) and Colby Armstrong (AtL) would look great on the wing, adding physicality and depth to the young gunning Panthers. It’s anyone’s guess regarding Jay Bo. If they can’t come to a contract agreement it makes the most sense to me to trade him, as long as you are getting solid return. He’s a top 5 defenseman in the league, but letting him walk for nothing in the summer makes the least sense of all. Rumours continue to swirl that several teams like Philadelphia and Edmonton are interested, so we’ll see how that plays out.
